The black humor of the film is exactly why it was considered controversial upon release, and how it manages to be so sincere and honest on the subject of nuclear war.

The film finds humor in the fact that nuclear war really is an absurd, logically inconsistent idea. The film targets the absurdity of nuclear war and the foolishness of the politicians who send young men to die. The brave soldiers who go to fight are not discredited, rather, the war machine that has them dying, in some situations for no reason, is made the butt of the joke.

The movie has an important statement to make, yet it never comes across as preachy. It's a sincerely, honestly funny film. The jokes are amusing on a base level of simply being good humor, but they also draw attention to the stupidity of nuclear war.

The centerpiece of these would have to be Doctor Strangelove himself. Strangelove is portrayed as a former Nazi, whose limp right hand will sometimes snap into a Nazi salute. It is through Strangelove that the link between nuclear armament and sexual dysfunction is made most clear and direct. When the bombs start to fall, his sexual thrill is made nearly tangible.

George C. Scott's performance as General Buck Turgidson is another highlight. It's odd to see such a wild performance from Scott, who is typically noted as a gruff master of understatement. Certainly, his trademark is to do with a grizzly whisper what most would do with a shout. Kubrick actually had to trick Scott into going so wild for this role by requesting over the top "practice" takes, and then using them in the actual movie. Slim Pickens as Major Kong was similarly fooled into giving a straight performance by being told that the film was a standard war film and not a comedy.

The movie begins with a couple of scientists, one working for the U.S. government, who discover some troubling data suggesting that the earth only has a few years left before global catastrophe strikes. We aren't sure what is going to happen, but we know that it is deadly serious. So much so the world governments engage in secret planning to prevent global panic.

While the government works on their plan to save what they think they can, we meet the main characters and see how they deal with the problem as it manifests itself. As the government has kept it secret, they are left to figure out what is happening on their own. Some figure out what to do in time to save themselves, others must accept their impending doom.

In order to really get a feel for the characters loss, we are introduced to several upstanding and likable characters, and see how they deal with the knowledge that their world is ending, without being able to do anything about it.

As those that survive come together and discover the "project" that the world governments have been secretly working on, we are faced with a dilemma. If you were to only save a small percentage of the population, who would be saved? The super smart? The super rich? The common man? I believe this question is effectively and satisfactorily answered. Suddenly, you can see the way creatures such as Ents look and how they sound rather than trying to picture it in your head.

Many people miss the reference to the two towers. The first belongs to Saruman. He is a wizard who appears first in the Fellowship of the Ring. Although we are aware that he has sided with the enemy, the extent of his treachery becomes obvious as we see him creating fierce creatures known as Uruk-Hai in the caves below his tower. The second tower is that occupied by Sauron himself.

Throughout the movie, you are introduced to some of the other characters which do not form the Fellowship but which are no less important. They include Theoden of Rohan, a human king who is fighting to keep his people safe. You meet the Ents, giant tree-like creatures who can walk and talk and who are truly fearsome when angered.

This story allows us to find out more about the main characters and the reasons that they behave the way they do. We learn more about Aragorn and are introduced to characters such as Eowyn, one of the Rohirrim who plays a pivotal role in the third book. We learn more about why Boromir would be so desperate to possess the ring that he would have taken it from Frodo by force.

There are many fantastic scenes in this movie such as the Battle of Helm's Deep. This battle takes place when the humans of Rohan take shelter in a stronghold which then comes under siege. An overwhelming force attacks them and it is only the arrival of elven warriors which allows the humans to survive. That in itself is miraculous as we learn that no elf has fought with a human since they last battled Sauron a thousand years earlier.

Although The Two Towers is one of the least appreciated of the three books, it is definitely worth reading. It will help explain how things reach the point they do when The Return of The King begins. - 40729

No-brainer for everyone involved, right?

In the meantime, while some good movies have succeeded at taking off both unique techniques successfully, I couldn't imagine any horror audience that craves guts, gore, and elevating body counts not wanting to kick start their Halloween season with Chain Letter. Sylvia : A Show Every Ballet Lover Must See

The ballet Sylvia is based on the play Aminta written by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso. It is a ballet performed in three acts with characters that are taken from mythology. The music used in the ballet is by Lo Delibes the French composer and is often cited as one of Delibes's greatest pieces of work. Unfortunately it could not live up to the acclaim of its music and its debut was met with a lukewarm response. Future performances of Sylvia were also unsuccessful and the ballet all but disappeared from the stage for many years.

Sir Frederick Ashton revived the ballet in 1952, however Sylvia still received a lukewarm reception, with many critics believing the story to be over complicated and confusing. Ashton revised the storyline further changing it into a one-act ballet but Sylvia never became as popular as other ballets and this version was last performed in 1965. A former student of Ashton's called Christopher Newton resurrected Sylvia once again in 2001, as he knew that Sir Frederick had always wanted to try again and change the ballet into three acts. In recent times the new version of Sylvia has received a better reception than previously.

The main characters in the ballet are Sylvia a nymph huntress and Aminta a young shepherd who is in love with Sylvia. The other protagonists come from mythology - the God of Love Eros and Diana the Goddess of hunting. The malevolent force within the ballet comes in the guise of Orion, a hunter who also desires Sylvia's affections. Various forest creatures, nymphs and dryads provide the ballet's pastoral imagery, with other minor characters such as peasants and hunt attendants featured.

A Sacred wood is the title of the first act of Sylvia and the ballet begins with a ritualistic scene featuring the forest creatures and nymphs dancing for the God Eros. Both Aminta and Sylvia stumble upon the scene and while Aminta remains hidden Sylvia and her hunt attendants make themselves known and mock Eros. Sylvia shoots an arrow at the hidden Aminta, not realizing it is her ardent suitor, but injures both Eros and Aminta with her arrow. The malevolent force in the play is Orion who is also in love with Sylvia and he has been watching the whole scene unfold and he uses the ensuing confusion as an opportunity to kidnap Sylvia.

In the second Act of Sylvia, entitled Orion's Island Cave, we find Sylvia being held against her will by Orion. Sylvia refuses all of Orion's attempts to win her over and hatches a plan to get him drunk so she can escape. She appeals to the God of love Eros for help and he appears along with a vision for Sylvia of Aminta waiting for her at Diana's temple. Eros helps Sylvia to escape taking her to the temple to be reunited with Aminta.

The final act - The Sea Coast Near The Temple Of Diana - sees Sylvia and Aminta briefly reunited however Orion is fast to catch up with them and starts to fight with Aminta. During the fight Orion tries to enter Diana's shrine, which is forbidden making the Goddess angry and she refuses to allow Aminta and Sylvia to be together. However all is not lost as God of love Eros presents Diana with a vision of her own young love. The memory of this past love results in Diana reversing her decision and Sylvia and Amintas' union is allowed with the good will of the Gods. - 40729
