It has much more in common with the work of the Marx Brothers than it does with Saving Private Ryan or The Dirty Dozen. The black humor of the film is exactly why it was considered controversial upon release, and how it manages to be so sincere and honest on the subject of nuclear war.

The film finds humor in the fact that nuclear war really is an absurd, logically inconsistent idea. The film targets the absurdity of nuclear war and the foolishness of the politicians who send young men to die. The brave soldiers who go to fight are not discredited, rather, the war machine that has them dying, in some situations for no reason, is made the butt of the joke.

The movie has an important statement to make, yet it never comes across as preachy. It's a sincerely, honestly funny film. The jokes are amusing on a base level of simply being good humor, but they also draw attention to the stupidity of nuclear war.

The centerpiece of these would have to be Doctor Strangelove himself. Strangelove is portrayed as a former Nazi, whose limp right hand will sometimes snap into a Nazi salute. It is through Strangelove that the link between nuclear armament and sexual dysfunction is made most clear and direct. When the bombs start to fall, his sexual thrill is made nearly tangible.

George C. Scott's performance as General Buck Turgidson is another highlight. It's odd to see such a wild performance from Scott, who is typically noted as a gruff master of understatement. Certainly, his trademark is to do with a grizzly whisper what most would do with a shout. Kubrick actually had to trick Scott into going so wild for this role by requesting over the top "practice" takes, and then using them in the actual movie. Slim Pickens as Major Kong was similarly fooled into giving a straight performance by being told that the film was a standard war film and not a comedy.

There are many fantastic scenes in this movie such as the Battle of Helm's Deep. This battle takes place when the humans of Rohan take shelter in a stronghold which then comes under siege. An overwhelming force attacks them and it is only the arrival of elven warriors which allows the humans to survive. That in itself is miraculous as we learn that no elf has fought with a human since they last battled Sauron a thousand years earlier.

The main characters in the ballet are Sylvia a nymph huntress and Aminta a young shepherd who is in love with Sylvia. The other protagonists come from mythology - the God of Love Eros and Diana the Goddess of hunting. The malevolent force within the ballet comes in the guise of Orion, a hunter who also desires Sylvia's affections. Various forest creatures, nymphs and dryads provide the ballet's pastoral imagery, with other minor characters such as peasants and hunt attendants featured.

A Sacred wood is the title of the first act of Sylvia and the ballet begins with a ritualistic scene featuring the forest creatures and nymphs dancing for the God Eros. Both Aminta and Sylvia stumble upon the scene and while Aminta remains hidden Sylvia and her hunt attendants make themselves known and mock Eros. Sylvia shoots an arrow at the hidden Aminta, not realizing it is her ardent suitor, but injures both Eros and Aminta with her arrow. The malevolent force in the play is Orion who is also in love with Sylvia and he has been watching the whole scene unfold and he uses the ensuing confusion as an opportunity to kidnap Sylvia.

In the second Act of Sylvia, entitled Orion's Island Cave, we find Sylvia being held against her will by Orion. Sylvia refuses all of Orion's attempts to win her over and hatches a plan to get him drunk so she can escape. She appeals to the God of love Eros for help and he appears along with a vision for Sylvia of Aminta waiting for her at Diana's temple. Eros helps Sylvia to escape taking her to the temple to be reunited with Aminta.

The final act - The Sea Coast Near The Temple Of Diana - sees Sylvia and Aminta briefly reunited however Orion is fast to catch up with them and starts to fight with Aminta. During the fight Orion tries to enter Diana's shrine, which is forbidden making the Goddess angry and she refuses to allow Aminta and Sylvia to be together. However all is not lost as God of love Eros presents Diana with a vision of her own young love. The memory of this past love results in Diana reversing her decision and Sylvia and Amintas' union is allowed with the good will of the Gods. - 40729

Let's say you weren't interested in this show when it first aired... Well, now's the time to give it a chance. Better late than never, right? Sopranos is definitely one of the top tv and movie downloads if you want to catch up on what's been hot for the last ten or so years.

The Sopranos is not a show about gangsters. Well, okay, it is, but more importantly, it's a show about family. The core of the show is not Tony Soprano's job, it's how his job affects his home life with his wife and children, how it affects his friendships and relationship with more distant family members, and even his crew are really just members of his extended family. It's a show about a family man who just happens to loan shark, steal and scam for a living.

Most crime stories are just crime stories. The Sopranos is a very human show about very real human beings. The crime family thing is a big part of it, but it's really only the backdrop, it's what these guys do for a living, it's not all there is to the show. We can relate to everything the characters on this show go through. We haven't all been shot by our best friends, but we've all been betrayed.

With the end of each season, nothing is ever made easier. The characters only have more problems to deal with as the ground under their feet becomes less stable.

The ending is really incredible. Some fans felt ripped off, but those people are missing the point. The Sopranos is not about easy answers, it's about the difficulty of life, how confusing and unpredictable it is. The ending actually doesn't carry any secret meaning at all. And whilst it may be straightforward to admit the presence of corruption in a state so associated with organized crime, the uncomfortable fact of the matter is that this is a vastly familiar condition. A spectator anywhere in the country will acknowledge similar failings in their own school system, and may share Bowdon's frustration and readiness for a solution. Bowdon comes out in favor of the charter school plan, of taxpayers being able to select their own schools, to get out from under the state's control.
