The Varying DJ Equipment

By Guy Degruy

Historically, the usual DJ setup would include two turntables, a mixer and some speakers. Today, however, we already have so many technological innovations that DJs can choose in the selecting so many ways of playing their music. The DJs can already use turntables, CD turntables, computer software or any combination of those three first mentioned. Each of these categories are described more in detail in their own sections.

Turntables - While these may just look like those same things your parents use to play their records on, but the similarities would have to end there. DJ turntables have so many other features that will never be found on the regular turntable. The most important among its features is its ability to adjust the speed of the movement of the record. This allows you to match the tempo of two or more songs so that you can easily blend them together.

CD Turntables - These are CD players that play regular CDs. However, the CD turntables also allow you to change the tempo of a song, so that you will be able to mix them well together with another song. Many Djs today would prefer this type of turntable, because it allows them to utilize CDs rather than vinyl.

Computer Software - Some DJs have moved beyond turntables and solely use software to mix their music. This is still a new area of DJing and lots of the older DJs look down on people who use this method. Today, however, there are many famous DJs that solely perform with the use of software called the Ableton Live.

Mixer - A mixer has two audio channels at least that need to be connected to whatever it is that you use in playing your music. This will enable you to control the songs' volume when you play them. The mixer also contains a fader, which lets song fade from one to the other, serving as their transition. A DJ will also further control the music that they play with the use of the Mixer's EQ. An EQ can increase or decrease certain frequencies of a song; its treble, mids or bass. A DJ can mix sounds very smoothly, as long as he knows the proper adjustment of its different levels.

Headphones - All DJs will always need a good pair of headphones that are professional. Those old walkman headphones will not be able to cut it - only those professional models are the ones that are packed with increased volume and sound separation that you need in following a mix. - 40729
