Movie Analysis: First Blood - Very Upsetting Action Movie

By Jessica J. Janeson

"First Blood," starring Sylvester Stallone, is one of the rare movies that has created a character that is today known the world over. Telling the tale of a Vietnam vet with special skills who is unwittingly pushed into a corner by a stereotypical redneck sheriff, this is one action movie that is a must see. Not only does it have fantastic action seems, but also a tense psychological dramatic element as well.

Our fable begins with a vagrant, a veteran of the Vietnam resistance drifting into a tiny town. On the exterior of town, he is met with some law who tell him that his brand is not appreciated in this municipality. Drifters are not permissible, as they are perceived as vermin who will sap the cities resources without giving anything back. After giving him the caution, the police leave him, and think that is that.

But, our leading role, John Rambo, shows up another time in town, and is arrested. He gets booked, and thrown into the county lockup. But he doesn't represent any harm, and he hasn't yet smashed any laws. He just sought after something to munch, and a temperate place to sleep. He may appear a little slow, but we feel for him, as the police seem to be mistreating him.

Then there is a skirmish, and the police chief steps over the line. And faintly injures this outwardly big brute. Drawing original blood, the sheriff has opened a can of worms he will quickly regret, likely for the rest of his life. Because John Rambo is a decidedly qualified killer, and well outfitted to deal with any kind of conflict, and come out on top.

This commences the nucleus of the film. One lone man, John Rambo, is pushed into a corner, and he responds with the only way he knows how. He retreats into the adjacent hills, and speedily finds himself in his element. Skilled to outlive, to hound, and to murder. The police speedily appreciate that they have their hands full, and bring in as many officers as they can.

Then an army Colonel shows up, and claims that he was Rambo's commanding officer during the Vietnam war. The police incorrectly believe he is there to look after his charge from the police. But they have it the other way around. Rambo's CO is there to bring him back before he does unalterable harm to the entire police force. He is there to save the law from Rambo, not the other way around. We follow John Rambo through the backwoods, and watch him battle his own psychological demons in one unusual show that has created one of he most well known action heroes of our time. If you haven't witnessed this movie, you must, as it is an example of unbelievable filmmaking, acting, and directing. - 40729
